Besides being a serious worldwide public health problem, suicide is a complex, multidimensional and universal phenomenon, which is an experience of intense psychological suffering. This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of nursing professionals about suicidal behavior in a public hospital in Goiânia-GO/Brazil. It´s a qualitative approach research, using the semi structured interview technique for data collect and Content Analysis technique for data analysis procedure. Seventy nursing professionals were interviewed, of which 46 were nursing technicians and 24 were nurses registered. From the collected data, 5 categories of analysis were listed, as follows: a) empathetic reception of the nursing professional; b) emotional reactions; c) perceptions about suicidal behavior d) factors that influence suicidal behavior; e) difficulties. Assertive care for those who are admitted to the emergency services is a determinant in the process of acceptance, adherence and continuity of treatment, extending to prevent further suicide attempts. The article points out for continuous improvement through continuing education and interdisciplinary work.
