Burnout Syndrome (BS) has been investigated in multi-professional health residents from eight areas of a university hospital. A descriptive, transversal, qualitative and quantitative research was applied, with 46 residents participating. Study participants answered an informative questionnaire about socio demographic, occupation data and suggested ideais to improve routine. The Burnout Inventory at Work was also used. It was observed that there was no significant difference between residents of the two levels (R1 and R2) in relation to BS. It was noted that 65% of the participants did not show BS, 60% were at alert phase to BS beginning and 31% were at attention phase. Most participants were female (89%), more than half (52%) were 22 to 25 years old, 57% were from the first year of residence and 50% were living in Rio de Janeiro city. Relations between BS, sociodemographic and occupational variables were verified. Dependent relation was verified only with the occupation variable. Pharmacies and Social Service were the areas with the most participants with BS diagnostic. To improve routine, residents suggested more presence of preceptors, increased number of professionals in hospital, better working conditions, reduced working hours and more interaction between professionals.
