Abstract

SANTOS, Rafaela Cristina Nicolau; PEREIRA, Vanessa Rosa; HOURI, Luciana Filgueiras  and  CASTANHEIRA, Vanise Santos. Musical Intervention as a Stress Reduction Instrument in the Clinical ICU. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2020, vol.23, n.2, pp. 113-125. ISSN 1516-0858.

The research investigated the psychological effects of music intervention as stress minimization of patients hospitalized in Intensive Care Unit (ICU Clinic) of a large public hospital. An experimental field study was conducted, guided by the observation of two groups: Control and Experimental. The first group was asked to answer a Sociodemographic Questionnaire and an ICU Stress Assessment Scale without receiving any exposure to music. The second received the musical intervention and responded to the same instruments of the Control Group, plus a Semi-Structured Interview that evaluated the meanings of this intervention in the ICU hospitalization experience. The results showed a statistically significant difference in stress scores at 5% (U = 445, p <0.05), indicating the positive effect of intervention in the Experimental Group. In turn, the responses obtained by the Semi-Structured Interview were subjected to Content Analysis and indicated that patients exposed to musical intervention were generally satisfied, relaxed, with a sense of well-being, accompanied by feelings of love and gratitude. It was possible to perceive that music is a health humanization strategy and a relevant non-pharmacological resource capable of helping to minimize the stress of the studied group.

Keywords : intensive care unit; psychological stress; music; intervention.
