INTRODUCTION: Cancer is considered one of the diseases that, when announced, arouses fantasies and fears. Signs of stress symptoms tend to show up in early stages of the diseaseOBJECTIVE: This research aimed to evaluate stress indexes of women with breast cancer during chemotherapyMETHODS: The sample consisted of 18 women between the ages of 40 and 59, diagnosed with breast cancer in early stages of the disease and undergoing treatment. To achieve the proposed objectives, a semi-structured questionnaire was used, multiprofessional records and the Lipp Adult Stress Symptom InventoryRESULTS: Descriptive statistics revealed that women with breast cancer showed significant signs of stress (77.8%), with symptoms compatible with the resistance phase (71.4%) and prevalence of psychological symptoms (50%CONCLUSION: The preliminary results of this research evidenced the profile of women assisted at a reference hospital for treatment of breast cancer in the state of Pernambuco. Those results were also significant because they can become an alert to the medical community and health professionals about the importance of psychologic suffering of women who are experiencing a process of illness that involves stressful situations
