OBJECTIVE: to study the perception of mothers, with babies admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), about a support group, called Grupo de Reflexão, carried out by psychologists in a maternity hospital in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. METHOD: qualitative approach research carried out with 16 mothers of babies admitted to the NICU. Data was collected through focus groups and explored through content analysis in the thematic modality. RESULTS: the participation of mothers in the Reflection Group favored learning through the exchange of experiences between them, contributed to the creation of a support network, reduced stress and helped in the re-signification of the experienced moment. Furthermore, the results showed the importance of preparing the professional for the development of the group, as well as the need for continuous assessment of the activity. CONCLUSION: the participation of mothers in the Reflection Group contributes to the mother's personal strengthening to deal with the hospitalization of her baby in the NICU. Therefore, the use of the Group as a follow-up strategy for these mothers is indicated.
