Abstract

CARNEIRO, Rhebecca Loiola; FERNANDES, Luciana Freitas  and  BONFADINI, Janine de Carvalho. Cognitive screening protocol in pre-kidney transplant psychological assessment. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2021, vol.24, n.2, pp. 132-141. ISSN 1516-0858.

The pre-transplant psychological assessment aims to identify modifiable variables, plan appropriate interventions and prepare the candidate for this treatment. It was noted the importance of including in this protocol the assessment of cognitive functions, which is considered a specific domain of assessment and enables the early identification of cognitive impairment. The construction of the protocol took place in the following stages: identification of demands, survey of articles that address cognitive screening instruments, discussion of results with experts, analysis of the instrument's applicability, and establishment of the protocol's routine and procedures. We included the Montreal Cognitive Assessment - Basic (MoCA-B) screening test to assess cognitive aspects in the existing pre-kidney transplant psychological assessment protocol. This test assesses visual perception, executive functions, language, attention, memory, and orientation, and it can be applied to patients with low education levels. This protocol plays an essential role in the pre-transplantation process, as it provides support for the planning of interventions necessary to optimize the procedure. The objective of this study was to systematize a cognitive screening protocol for use in adults aged 50 years and over in the context of pre-kidney transplant psychological assessment.

Keywords : pre-transplant psychological assessment; cognitive screening; chronic kidney disease.
