Rev. SBPH [online]. 2022, vol.25, n.2, pp. 108-122. ISSN 1516-0858.  http://dx.doi.org/10.57167/Rev-SBPH.v25.486.

Premature babies' hospitalization in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, represents a life threat for parent that can hamper the construction of a parent-baby bond, and the elaboration process about the lived experience. The diary is a therapeutic tool that provides families with the possibility of narratives and elaborating feelings. The study aimed to understand the parenting process of parents of premature infants admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, through the construction of a diary. This is a qualitative-descriptive research, carried out in a philanthropic hospital in the north of the Rio Grande do Sul state, with 7 couples and 1 mother of hospitalized premature babies, using the proposal of a diary entitled: Love Diary. The content was analyzed using Thematic Content Analysis by a semi-structured interview with guiding questions. From this, 4 themes emerged: experiences about pregnancy, birth and hospitalization of the baby in the NICU; elaboration and resignification of life; bonding and parenting; and, contributions from the diary. The results suggest that the diary construction during hospitalization allows to parents have therapeutic processes of moment lived resignification, and to strengthen parenting.
