Abstract

ELYSEU JUNIOR, Sebastião. Fraternal complex: the primary source of jealousy and envy. Psicol. teor. prat. [online]. 2003, vol.5, n.2, pp. 55-66. ISSN 1516-3687.

In this paper, we seek to discuss the dimensions of the fraternal complex, and to establish the envious and jealous feelings, wishes and behaviours, as direct manifestations of the fraternal rivalry. To reach these aims we initially discuss the concept of libidinal energy, using some knowledge on human processing of information, responsible for the generation of feelings and other psychic manifestations. Afterwards, we use data, that confronts the dimension that this complex and Oedipus complex have for traditional psychoanalysis. One of these confrontations derives from the existence of an ownership instintive behaviour, fundamental to survival and to which are linked the envious and jealous feelings, wishes and behaviours. We conclude to the universality of the fraternal complex according to which a younger child disputes his/her mother also with the father, and to the eventuality of the Oedipus complex, passible to exist only after the child becomes older.

Keywords : Oedipus complex; Jealousy; Envy.
