Abstract

Cardiac patients have decreased sanguine circulation, which can cause necrosis. At the final stage of the disease, the member is amputated and as a consequence the body image and the identity are influenced. The psychological treatment is important in the promotion and maintenance of health, minimizing mental health consequences. The objective was to verify the psychic experience of an hospitalized amputed patient through his expression on sandplay. It was used clinical interview, the drawing of human being figure and adapted sandplay technique. Themes related to the disease were expressed, as well as their meaning, fear of death, revolt against the illness and psychodynamic aspects of personality. Results showed that the body symptoms were related with intense emotional contents at the psychic level. The sandplay promoted through the playful action the expression and elaboration of anxieties contents related to the disease. The utilization of these instruments contributes to new levels of understanding by the patient.
