Abstract

This quantitative study was to investigate the relation between social skills and psychological well-being of young unemployed. Participated in it 232 youngsters, aged between 18 and 24 years of both sexes, the average duration of unemployment was 9.56 months. The study was developed in a job agencies (Sine) and public school in the Vale do Paranhana (RS). We used a socio-demographic questionnaire, the social skills inventory (Inventário de Habilidades Sociais - IH S-Del-Prette) and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ -12). The data analysis showed a significant correlation between social skills and psychological well-being (p < 0.05) indicating that among the unemployed youngs, that the higher the index of social skills is the most level of health. The results suggest that unemployment may affect the young adults in many ways however, but a good score of social skills can mitigate the negative effect, provide health.
