BORSA, Juliane Callegaro; SOUZA, Daiane Silva de  e  BANDEIRA, Denise Ruschel. Prevalence of behavior problems in a sample of children from Rio Grande do Sul. Psicol. teor. prat. [online]. 2011, vol.13, n.2, pp. 15-29. ISSN 1516-3687.

This study investigated the prevalence of behavior problems, measured through CBCL/6‑18, in a sample of schoolchildren living in Porto Alegre, the metropolitan region, and the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The study included 140 fathers, mothers, or caregivers of boys and girls, from the third and fifth series of elementary education, of public and private schools. The results showed that both boys and girls presented a high prevalence of problems related to aggressive behavior (externalizing), followed by the anxiety/ depression problems and problems related to isolation/depression (internalizing). In general, internalizing behavior problems predominated over the externalizing ones. With regard to gender, no statistically significant differences were found between boys and girls concerning the different kinds of behavior problem. The variables "low socioeconomic status", "public school", and "parents divorce" were associated to behavior problems, according to the scores obtained by the CBCL/6‑18 Total Behavior Problems Scale. One concludes the sociodemographic variables may influence on the manifestation of child behavior problems and deserve to be investigated.
