ALVES, Railda Fernandes et al. Gender and health: men's care in debateGénero y salud: el cuidado del hombre en debate. Psicol. teor. prat. [online]. 2011, vol.13, n.3, pp. 152-166. ISSN 1516-3687.

This article is the result of a scientific initiation survey; it presents an analysis of the perception of men towards their own health care. It is based in the National Program for Integral Attention to Men's Health (Política Nacional de Atenção Integral à Saúde do Homem - PNAISH) in order to discuss men's access to Primary Health Care - PHC (Atenção Primária à Saúde - APS). Data were collected through a questionnaire and a structured interview. The sample consisted of 25 to 59 year old men enrolled in the Family Health Program (N = 82). The results show the differences between the male and female genders regarding health care. Women are considered to be more careful and men more vulnerable to psychosocial aspects such as machismo, the difficulties in assuming the disease in their workplace and accessibility to health services. The prevention to prostate cancer was the most pointed out aspect when the concern is health.

Keywords : health care psychology; health care policy; public health; gender; male; salud pública.
