Abstract

The objective of this study was to identify and compare social representations of violence and abuse among elderly community health agents and health professionals working in the Family Health Program. The sample was non-probabilistic and intentional, consisting of 50 health agents and 50 health professionals (29 nurses and 11 doctors and 10 dentists) of both sexes (59% female). It was applied a socio-demographic questionnaire and the Technique of Free Association of Words, from the stimulus-inductor "violence" and "abuse". Data collected were analyzed using the technique of natural semantic networks. It was felt that violence and abuse to the elderly has been recorded mainly in expressions such as contempt, aggression, suffering and trauma, bringing consequences professional, family and organizational victims. The professionals evoked words related to traumas, while the health agents linked to the abandonment
