Abstract

This study investigated the process of disclosure of sexual abuse in the perception of mothers of victims. Twenty-seven nonabusive mothers of sexually abused girls children and adolescent who were victims of intra or extra-familial sexual abuse participated, with aged between 20-48 years old, that attending services for situations of violence. Individual interviews were conducted and analysis of data indicated that the disclosure of abuse occurred as a process that involved three stages: the history of revelation, revelation itself, and repercussions of the revelation in the family context. In this process characteristics of the victim, his family and their context are involved. The importance of family support network and of qualified services and professionals to face this situation are discussed.
