Abstract

SANTOS, Thalita Mara; VIEIRA, Lídia Cristiane  and  FARIA, Cleyciane Alves. Hearing disability and the workplace: a vision from the employers of the city of Uberlândia-MG. Psicol. teor. prat. [online]. 2013, vol.15, n.2, pp. 92-103. ISSN 1516-3687.

People with hearing disabilities, by means of legal achievements, have conquered their workplace. However, this does not necessarily guarantee their social inclusion, as this process depends on the use of sign language and on the recognition of the real challenges, needs and potential of those involved. Thereby, the aim of this paper consists on investigating the viewpoint of employers concerning employment and social inclusion of deaf workers. The data was collected through a semi-structured interview, with 11 people responsible for the human resources departments of companies in numerous types of businesses and sectors from the city of Uberlândia. The results pointed out inefficiency in the communication process and employment strategy that occurs in some of the researched companies, which dues to a legal determination imposed by the State. The sound barriers and the employers conceptions are obstacles to the social inclusion of people with hearing difficulties in a business environment.

Keywords : deafness; workplace; human resources; communication; sign language.
