Abstract

VIEIRA, Gabriela Teixeira  and  NASCIMENTO, Adriano Roberto Afonso. Psychosocial aspects of paternal identity construction. Psicol. teor. prat. [online]. 2014, vol.16, n.1, pp. 57-68. ISSN 1516-3687.

This study aims to analyze from the perspective of Social Identity Theory the psychosocial aspects involved in the construction of fatherhood from the viewpoint of 14 fathers, between the ages of 20 and 50, all parents of their first child, aged 2-7 months, living in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte. Interviews were conducted from a semi-structured script, which subsequently were subjected to content analysis. The categories were organized according to the three components of social identity: cognitive (be responsible; to give love and affection), evaluative (be good father) and emotional (pleasurable activities carried out with the children). Global results show that respondents seek to negotiate in their daily relationships, in a wide range of ways, the traditional meanings and practices of being a father with the latest social expectations about that role.

Keywords : paternity; social identification; social group; qualitative analysis; social psychology.
