Abstract

GREINERT, Bruna Rafaele Milhorini  and  MILANI, Rute Grossi. Post-partum depression: psycho-social understanding. Psicol. teor. prat. [online]. 2015, vol.17, n.1, pp. 26-36. ISSN 1516-3687.

Current descriptive and qualitative analysis identifies psychological and social factors that favor the development of post-partum depression (PPD). Data were collected by half-structured interviews in a sample composed of eight mothers, aged between 20 and 38, diagnosed with PPD. Results provided the understanding of psychosocial factors that affected the manifestation of the pathology. Lack of preparation and inability to cope with motherhood, the idealization of motherhood and concern on the professional life and financial conditions contributed towards PPD. PPD prevention programs that take into consideration the described psychosocial factors are required. They may be developed during pregnancy since the physical, emotional and social changes are already blooming for the future mother.

Keywords : pregnancy; puerperium; motherhood; maternal depression; psychosocial aspects.
