The author examines the relationship between self-image in old age and the construction of personal identity. The role of mirror played by the mother, the family and the society acquires, in large part, in a certain phase of maturity, an important role in the construction of an authentic and singular I. Personal accounts of two filmmakers and clinical reports are utilized in the application of the theoretical proposals of D. W. Winnicott regarding the relation between being and being seen.
