Abstract

CAROPRESO, Fátima. Limits of knowledge according to Freud's first theory of the mental apparatus. Nat. hum. [online]. 2016, vol.18, n.2, pp. 29-48. ISSN 1517-2430.

This paper aims to analyze the first theory of the mental apparatus, developed by Freud, with the objective of discussing how the possibility of consciousness - and, hence, of the knowledge of external world and ourselves - is conceived of by Freud in this stage of his work. The paper centers on the hypotheses presented in Chapter VII of Freud's book on dreams, but certain ideas developed in previous and subsequent metapsychological works are also addressed.

Keywords : psychoanalysis; Freud; metapsychology; mental apparatus; consciousness.
