FONSECA, Eduardo R. da. Sade and Schopenhauer: matter and metaphysics. Nat. hum. [online]. 2019, vol.21, n.spe, pp. 83-101. ISSN 1517-2430.

Sade and Schopenhauer are philosophers who thought about matter while discarding creationism. Schopenhauer thinks matter and its forms within his metaphysics of the will, while Sade is a materialist himself who starts from physics and takes his conception of matter to the ultimate consequences. In both writers, what is inherent in the material world is the conflict and weariness, the horror and banality of evil, as well as the cosmic indifference inherent in the phenomena that constitute the world. The present article analyzes the peculiarities of materialism in both authors and interprets the conception of Sade under the light of the Schopenhauerian point of view.

Palavras-chave : Materialism; Death; Sexuality; Wickedness; Indifference.
