Abstract

LAHITTE, H. B.; FERRARI, H. R.  and  LAZARO, L.. About the ethogram, 1: From the ethogram as a language to the language of ethograms. Rev. etol. [online]. 2002, vol.4, n.2, pp. 129-141. ISSN 1517-2805.

The ethogram, as the first step in any behaviour research, can be conceived as the generation of a special type of language. From this viewpoint, we propose some rules to improve its production and use, paying special attention to the operations and elections through which it is elaborated. The distinction of pragmatic, syntactic and semantic dimensions in an ethogram facilitates comparisons based on its structure rather than on the object that is to be described. On the other hand, recovering its textual nature, a double relation is established with it: creating the text and consulting it; this sequence of interpretations and re- interpretations demands a previous compatibility of conceptual frames.

Keywords : Ethogram; Ethology; Peccaries.
