LEITE, Marcela Adriana de Souza e CODENOTTI, Thaïs Leiroz. Parental behavior of male rheas Rhea americana (Linnaeus, 1758), in a natural enviroment, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Rev. etol. [online]. 2005, vol.7, n.1, pp. 43-47. ISSN 1517-2805.
The parental behavior of 3 male rheas Rhea americana with young aged 0 to 30 days (in one case, also with young from 30 to 60 days of life) was observed in a rural property of Coxilha, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Males differed in the frequency and duration of parental behavior displayed and there was a decrease in this behavior towards older young. Parental behavior seems to influence the reproductive success of rhea males.
