Abstract

TOMANARI, Gerson Yukio. Conditioned reinforcement. Rev. bras. ter. comport. cogn. [online]. 2000, vol.2, n.1, pp. 61-67. ISSN 1517-5545.

The present paper reviews studies on the process by which a primarily neutral stimulus comes to exert reinforcing functions following associations with a formerly established reinforcer. The paper reviews conceptual aspects of conditioned reinforcement, its determining parameters (number of pairings, magnitude of reinforcement etc), the methods of investigation (procedures such as insistence to extinction, chained schedules, observing responses, token economy) and, finally, some theories that describe the fundamental conditions necessary to establish and maintain conditioned reinforcers.

Keywords : conditioned reinforcement; delay reduction hypothesis; uncertainty reduction hypothesis.
