REGRA, Jaíde A.G.. Methods for working in child psychotherapy: changes occurred and new directions. Rev. bras. ter. comport. cogn. [online]. 2000, vol.2, n.1, pp. 79-101. ISSN 1517-5545.

This study aimed at describing changes in child therapy that have occurred in the last thirty years. It shows how to be careful in child attendance, the search for the controlling variables of the problem behavior, as well as the relevance of parent orientation, representing aspects that need further analysis. Procedures for the functional analysis are illustrated with the case of a little child whose problem behavior was a refusal to go to school. The process of therapy involved changes in behavior of both parents and teachers. The child adaptive behavior is reinforced step by step. The child verbal behavior also had to be analyzed and this task was accomplished through metaphors and story-telling in a controlled situation, with material and questions presented by the therapist. Based on the characters of the story and their actions, research and application are made. A change in child behavior, becoming more adaptive, and the observation of parents, when needed, provide a way that makes it possible for the therapist to examine his own work.

Palavras-chave : child attendance; refusal to go to school; school phobia; metaphor analysis.
