Resumen

LIMA, Rosa Maria Cecílio de Souza  y  ENUMO, Sônia Regina Fiorini. The genetic assignment and its stressors according to the parents of the children with evidence of Cystic Fibrosis. Rev. bras. ter. comport. cogn. [online]. 2001, vol.3, n.1, pp. 41-55. ISSN 1517-5545.

The relationship between stress and chronic disease has usually been studied starting from the medical diagnosis. However, it can happen before the identification of the disease, especially in genetic testing. This paper intended to identify, by recorded interview, the difficulties generated by medical orientation for genetic testing in 40 parents of children with suspicion of cystic fibrose. There are some stressors generated by the possibility of a positive diagnosis. The parents (56%) had already seen several professionals, being directed by the public health services (55%) in search of a diagnosis; a factor that made them more susceptible of developing stress answers. Most of them (62,5%) told that they didn't obtain any information about the procedure adopted, which, in his turn, generated anxiety and distress in the family (35%). It is suggested, among other aspects, that the professionals need to identify and to consider those stressors in die assistence offered to the families, like the social support.

Palabras clave : Cystic fibrosis; genetic testing; stress; psychological impact; parents.
