Due to the accelerated process of rupture in family bonds as a result of the increasingly problematic issue of the adolescents in street environment and the deterioration in life conditions of this same population, and assuming that family is, in principle, the ideal locus for the individual's psychosocial development, this study aims to identify the family social representations, elaborated by the adolescents in street environment and their respective families, as well as to verify the importance of these representations within the scope of communication and as a behavior guide amongst them, focusing the psychosocial aspects. It is a field study, exploratory, based on the Social Representations Theory. The research was done at the Shelter of Pólo Central de Atendimento, a unit of the Work and Social Action Department in Fortaleza, State of Ceará, which shelters adolescents in this specific situation. The instruments used for the collection of data were: Free Association of Words test on 40 individuals; semi-structured interview, evaluating 31 individuals defined by exhaustive inquiry; and asystematic observation. The data has undergone the analysis of thematic content supported by premiss of Bardin and a statistical evaluation based on Tri-Deux-Mots program. The analyzed data pointed out five empirical categories: family perception; feelings about family; causes of family rupture; peculiarities about the street and construction of social identity. The results showed that family represents ambiguous feelings, of unity and disunity, associated with the image of lived up family and desired family constructed from the individuals' daily interaction; influencing and being influenced by the conflicting family relationships.
