This study  focuses on the question of prevention in the approach to infant mental health, looking at hospital and clinical experiences and psychoanalytic research involving observation of the mother/infant couple from the onset of gestation. Our practice of observation and intervention was conducted at the University of Brasilia Hospital (HUB) Prenatal Ambulatory Clinic, Neonatal ICU, Nursery and Maternity Ward.  This research was developed in partnership with the Department of Clinical Psychology at the University  of Brasilia Institute of Psychology (UnB-IP).  Psychoanalysis provides the theoretical reference point informing the entire study, including supervision of the research team, and orients our study methods, our praxis and our listening within the hospital setting. The area under consideration for our practice is early childhood; particular emphasis is given to studies concerned with the emotional bond of the mother/infant couple and their interactions.
