Abstract

NOLASCO, Sócrates A.. Body Modification (BM): o corpo e a experiência de si no contemporâneo. Rev. Mal-Estar Subj. [online]. 2006, vol.6, n.2, pp. 370-395. ISSN 1518-6148.

This paper is based on the research work that I have been doing within a population of young college students. The practice of body modification is being adopted by such young individuals as a way of affirming themselves in the world. In Brazil, body modification has been practiced by people without proper technical habilitation, consisting in a high risk practice. In the context of cybernetic and informational societies, the alterations in appearance stand as an attempt to retrieve the body as a living process and make it reappear as the territory of the subjective scene. Body modification can be viewed as an attempt to personalize existence, in the context of an impersonal and image oriented society. Such alterations arise in contemporary culture, where the concept of human nature has been altered over the years, approaching a model in which technical advances became the guiding axis.

Keywords : body modification; body; awareness; conciousness; contemporary culture; pain; phenomenology; subjectivity.
