ALENCAR, Helenira Fonsêca de  e  FREIRE, José Célio. O lugar da alteridade na psicologia ambiental. Rev. Mal-Estar Subj. [online]. 2007, vol.7, n.2, pp. 305-328. ISSN 1518-6148.

This article recaptures a discussion about the place of alterity in Environmental Psychology, analyzing the following categories: appropriation of space, place identity, emotional attachment to places and affective maps. With this analysis, we investigate, within the transactional perspective of Environmental Psychology, the role of the other on the relation of the individual with the environment, from an ethic based on Emmanuel Lévinas' conception of radical alterity. He have done a critical-theoretic study, from a methodology of deconstruction (Derrida) that uses polissemy, dissemination, repetition, and difference as elements of the speech. Regarding the concept of appropriation of space, a discussion took place about the center of 'me', concerning the alterity and the effort to transform the 'other' in 'me' through an active or symbolic process. The concept of place identity was deconstructed from the concept of identification, which addresses to the concept of appropriation of space. To this last concept, we proposed the concepts of ipseity and hospitality to the other environment, as ethic alternatives of sheltering alterity. We have found that the ethic possibility of alterity on the concepts of place attachment and affective maps, whenever these imply the embracing of the different, does not depend on a previous identification with the different.
