Abstract

JACOBY, Alessandra Rodrigues; FALCKE, Denise; LAHM, Camila Roberta  and  NUNES, Gislaine Jardim. Assédio moral: uma guerra invisível no contexto empresarial. Rev. Mal-Estar Subj. [online]. 2009, vol.9, n.2, pp. 619-645. ISSN 1518-6148.

Mobbing has become a common subject in labor research. This special type of harassment seems to be as old as the origins of work per se. Nowadays, however, it has drawn more interest, mainly from labor-related organizations and unions which have been receiving more and more employees' complaints about their superiors. Taking the rise of such cases into account, this paper discusses the experiences of people who claim to have suffered Mobbing at work. The authors describe the victims' profile, the harassment characteristics and the contexts in which it occurs, its forms and its impact on the victims' daily lives. To this end, two individuals were asked to describe their professional career and, more importantly, to detail the harrassement episode they consider they have gone through. In order to analyse the data, the Multiple Cases Study Method (Yin, 2005) was used. Special emphasis was given to the similarities and differences between the cases. In addition, a qualitative approach was chosen in order to devise a more nuanced analysis of the victims' harassment experiences. The results indicate that these experiences have brought acute emotional as well as physical consequences to the interviewees' lives. Furthermore, contradicting the initial hypothesis about the fragility of the harassed individuals, the interviewees, who declared themselves to be victims, showed determination, knowledge, competence, dynamism and attitudes which conferred them credit and prominence in their workplaces.
