The article provides a brief discussion on the working conditions and lives of some garis and garbage pickers of Fortaleza/CE in the perspective to understand how these subjects understand the relationship of "dealing with the garbage" with society. The information brought here belong to a category that emerged in the speeches of the workers interviewed in a poll of master's and such information have been built in the second half of 2007 following the opinion of the Research Ethics Committee of Human Beings with the Federal University of Ceará (Case 205/2007). In terms of methodology, we made use of qualitative methodology and technique of semi-structured with a group of ten people (sampling by saturation). We observed that: i) "work with the garbage" is for some interviewees a letter decent, not for others, ii) the respondents perceive the non-recognition of their work by society and, iii) there is still a bias for some interviewees, but the society is increasing its awareness. The intention in choosing this theme was to contribute to that greater attention be provided to humans who are in the condition of catadores garis and recyclable materials in Fortaleza/CE.
