NOVAES, Joana de Vilhena. Sobre uma falta que o excesso não cobre: reflexões clínicas acerca de uma jovem obesa e suas relações familiares. Rev. Mal-Estar Subj. [online]. 2009, vol.9, n.4, pp. 1253-1278. ISSN 1518-6148.

From the eighties on the body culture started to become a fashion theme, object of specialists' concern and anguish source for the women. In a society where the body, besides a consumption object, becomes the privileged locus of the feminine identity, the relationship with one's own body becomes unpleasant and persecutory. Taking fatness as a paradigm of ugliness, a clinical case is presented in order to point out how attitudes in relation to fatness produces subjectivities as well as specific social bonds marked by social exclusion. This social rejection provokes a deep psychic suffering frequently observed at the clinic with obese people. Taking as reference the psychoanalytic theory as well as its reading of the family dynamics we intend to understand the obesity also as a symptom that apart from looking for an enunciation of what cannot be said, points out to some of the family's dysfunctions.
