Abstract

PEDROSO, Janari da Silva; RIBEIRO, Maria Alexina  and  NOAL, Letícia. Os pais frente ao adoecimento psíquico do filho. Rev. Mal-Estar Subj. [online]. 2010, vol.10, n.2, pp. 521-536. ISSN 1518-6148.

This work is a theoretical study of the impact produced on parents by a child's psychic suffering. It encompasses the concepts and debates about child health, the signs of difficulties of parents facing their child's psychic suffering; it also analyzes the impossibility of acknowledging symptoms, feelings and the unconscious aspects which permeate the suffering process. The results of this study emphasize the importance of knowing what a child's psychic suffering entails for his parents, insofar as this determines family life, the therapist's protocol and the very outcome of the treatment. The child will benefit from an accurate appraisal giving priority to the understanding of what denotes the symptoms; furthermore, new possibilities of intervention appear for parents who suffer psychically as much as their child. The unconscious character of contact with the child's problems comes out in particular. The authors acknowledge that, in the process, the child embodies some unconscious conflicts of the parents as couple, man, woman or even as a reminiscence of the children they were.
