Abstract

This is a report of an experience aimed to intervene in a public elementary school, which emphasizes teacher's mental health. The study was conducted by four psychology graduation students of University Julio de Mesquita Filho, "campus" of Assis, São Paulo, during their stage in the discipline Psychology and Health at Work, with the teacher supervision. The base theory used was the psychodynamics of work, with contributions from social psychology. The method was participant observation, totaling 32 hours of observation, according to a previously established routine to perform an organizational diagnosis. The intervention was specific, conducted in three meetings to discuss issues relevant to the reality of teachers identified in the diagnosis. In these meetings the following issues were discussed: workplace interpersonal relationships and the relationship between family and school. : work organization, formation, remuneration and municipalization were identified by an analysis of the whole process. It was concluded that work organization is damaging teachers' health, leading to mental suffering. Evaluations of this kind of intervention by the students were favorable and they request a continuation of the process, indicating that this is a promising area for psychology intervention as a method of students' training and a more consistent proceeding for psychologists
