Teachers are exposed to various occupational stressors which, if persistent, can lead to burnout syndrome. This is a qualitative study realized with eight elementary school teachers in a school in Porto Alegre. The purpose of this study was to verify the knowledge, the symptoms, the process and consequences of burnout syndrome in these professionals. The information was collected through semi-structured interview consisting of six guiding questions and was analyzed by the technique of content analysis. The results reveal that teachers have adequate information about the syndrome and also some distortions and they identify as depression. They point to behavioral symptoms and physical aspects, and as determinants indicate the teacher's personal characteristics, conditions and organization of work and lack of rewards. They refer be a slow process and that culminates in the complete inability to adequately carry out their function. Teachers suggest actions of individual counseling, organizational and social changes.
