Abstract

BALINHAS, Vera Lúcia Gainssa et al. Teaching images: a study on the work process and teacher malaise. Rev.Mal-Estar Subj [online]. 2013, vol.13, n.1-2, pp. 249-270. ISSN 1518-6148.

This text is about constructed teachers' images of public schools run by town administration in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul. It presents part of a research carried through 2007 and 2009. Our objective was to analyze elements entwined in teachers' working process. Through functional official data and interviews, we were able to discuss the working process and the teachers' expectations about education and their own career, as well as the connections between those images and the teacher's health. Our approach points out that the image of teaching as a sacrifice has been naturalized as a hard component of the working process. The "master of renunciation" is branded by the images of professionalism - working without physical nor emotional conditions is understood as part of the donation process and teachers' fighting acts. Under those conditions, sacrifice grows until the limits of illness installation or emotional detachment from work.

Keywords : teaching work; teacher malaise; images of teaching; health.
