CAPOVILLA, Fernando Cesar; MARTINS, Antonielle Cantarelli  e  OLIVEIRA, Wanessa Garcia Santos. Creating dictionaries of sign languages: iconographic, linguistic and contemporary models. Cad. There are three periods in sign language lexicography (pre-Stokoean, Stokoean, and post-Stokoean), each with its own lexicographic strategy for designing sign language dictionaries. Iconographic or Pre-Stokoean era dictionaries employ analogical representation, resorting to mimicry, pantomime and gestures. Linguistic or Stokoean era dictionaries employ linguistic representation strategy based on the description of discrete recombinative units pertaining to hand-shape, articulation place, movement and facial expression. Contemporary or Post-Stokoean era dictionaries employ both, analogical and linguistic representation strategies. The paper compares lexicographic strategies used in six classical sign language dictionaries, which pertain to one or another of the three eras of sign language lexicography. For the purpose of maximizing pragmatic efficacy of sign language dictionaries, the paper discusses the importance of graphic illustrations and sign form descriptions emphasizing how sign form is inspired by sign meaning.
