Abstract

TSIFTZOGLOU, Karina et al. Evidence on equine therapy in cerebral palsy: a literature review from the PEDro base. Cad. Pós-Grad. Distúrb. Desenvolv. [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.1, pp. 36-50. ISSN 1519-0307.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5935/cadernosdisturbios.v19n1p35-50.

INTRODUCTION: Equine therapy (ET) uses three-dimensional movements of the horse with the objective of promoting physical, social and psychological well-being enabling treatment in the form of integrated therapy. Cerebral palsy (CP) consists of a group of motor disorders resulting from non-progressive permanent injury, presenting physical impairment, being more common in childhood. Although ET is considered to be an efficient and motivating therapeutic resource, careful and methodologically structured studies that demonstrate the scientific evidence of this therapeutic model are necessary for therapies to be based on reliable eligibility criteria. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to collect scientific evidence about ET and the treatment of the person with PC from the articles indexed by the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro). METHOD: As descriptors were used "hyppotherapy" and "cerebral palsy", being inclusion criteria original studies of the type randomized clinical trials, systematic reviews and guidelines of clinical practice in physiotherapy. RESULTS: Fifteen articles that met the inclusion criteria for the study were included in the study, six articles of systematic review, nine articles that reported clinical trials, with evaluation scores ranging from 4/10 to 8/10. The period covered by this review shows a balance in the production and the search for evidence on this subject in the last ten years, with five articles published between 2014-2018 and seven in the period 2009-2013, with only three previous to this period. CONCLUSION: The ET is a motivating therapeutic resource that can be indicated for children and young people with CP and although the literature is not unanimous in the evidence, most studies indicate benefits of this form of therapy for the child or young person with CP.
