INTRODUCTION: Child development depends on intrinsic and extrinsic factors to occur properly, which includes since the maturation of the central nervous system (CNS), to a favorable nutritional status. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between nutritional status and neuropsychomotor development in preschool children at a private day care center in the city of Maceió-AL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional, quantitative study conducted at a private day care center. A total of 38 children aged 2 to 6 years were evaluated. The anthropometric measures and neuropsychomotor development were evaluated through the Denver II Test, after statistical analysis of the association between the variables. RESULTS: Regarding the nutritional status, 57.9% were classified with adequate body mass index for age, 94.7% of height for age and 76.3% for weight for age. It was observed that 88.2% of the children presented development compatible with normality and 17.8% presented developmental failures. The domain that presented the most failures was personal-social (31.6%). We identified a statistically significant relationship between weight and height and neuropsychomotor development with p < 0.05. There was no statistically significant difference between the sexes regarding development through the Denver II Test and between body mass index and development. CONCLUSION: It is important to note the importance of this study for the detection of deficits in growth and development in the pre-school period, making possible an early and multidisciplinary intervention.
