A large annual proportion of births in Brazil comes from pregnancy in adolescence, which has social, economic and psychological repercussions for the development of both mother and baby. The present study is characterized as the result of the development of a qualitative research, and aimed to identify the perceptions of adolescents from high school of a public and a private school from Santa Catarina's mountain range, with the theme "pregnancy in adolescence". The sample selection criterion was to attend the second year of high school from the selected schools. Seventeen adolescents, 14 private school students and 3 public school students, aged between 16 and 18 years participated in the study. Because it is a qualitative research, it was possible to identify the subjective aspects of the events studied even in the case of groups with different numbers of participants. The data collection instrument was the semi-structured interview and the data analysis was through content analysis from the interviews. Results showed that all the adolescents interviewed see early pregnancy as something bad, with countless negative consequences. A significant number of students have had sexual encounters, but know few methods to prevent pregnancy, not demonstrating knowledge of how existing methods work. The public school, through a differentiated approach, provided the students with meaningful teachings about sexual education. The students from the private school do not remember to have had sexual education in a remarkable way in the curriculum. The present study provides subsidies for health education actions aimed at the prevention of teenage pregnancy.
