Autism is a disorder characterized by the impairment of some areas of development, namely, social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication and behavior. It is believed that physical therapy has beneficial effects that can contribute to motor development and assist the prevention of future impairments, in addition to promoting social integration. OBJECTIVE: to systematically review the literature regarding the role of the physiotherapy in motor development of children with autism spectrum disorder. METHODS: studies produced and published in the period from 2011 to 2020 were reviewed in the Portuguese language and that belonged to the area of physiotherapy or related areas. Searches were carried out in the databases Liteatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (Lilacs), Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), Portal de Periódicos Eletrônicos em Psicologia (Pepsic) and Ebsco. RESULTS: 25 productions were found, of which only five were cataloged, as they directly addressed the topic. The other productions were excluded because they were not related to the objective of the work. To analyze them, the results of the studies were considered, that is, the ideas and discussions considered by the authors of the selected articles. CONCLUSIONS: the studies analyzed state that physical therapy contributes to the improvement of motor skills of children with autism, helping with coordination skills, and preventing limitations in the performance of functional activities.
