DUARTE, Cintia Perez; PERANDIN, Giovana Pegorer; LAVIANO, Liliane  y  BARRETO, Taynara Freire. Interdisciplinary approach to assessment and intervention in feeding difficulties in autism. Cad. Pós-Grad. Distúrb. Desenvolv. [online]. 2021, vol.21, n.2, pp.109-127. ISSN 1519-0307.

The prevalence of eating disorders has increased in recent years, and the age of onset has decreased. Behavioral and organic red flags that require attention and suggest specialized assessment include: extended mealtimes; food refusal for at least a month; stressful meals and disruptive behaviors; the deficit in independent eating skills; night eating; need for distractions to eat; breastfeeding period or prolonged bottle use; and difficulty in eating foods with new textures. It is estimated that up to 90% of people with autism have eating difficulties and, of these, 70% have food selectivity. There is a drop in these families' quality of life, with deficits related to health and social relationships. This article aims to discuss the importance of the integrated work of interdisciplinary teams aimed at caring for people with autism who have eating difficulties, based on a theoretical review and in the clinical practice by the authors. Such process, considering from the evaluation to the intervention, is essential for the effectiveness of the treatment, and family training and monitoring are essential for reaching the generalization and maintenance of the evolutions related to eating behaviors.
