This is a report of an experience occurred in a community originated from a quilombo (a slave settlement) in which the method of participant observation revealed the researcher as a historical character which actions have a political meaning. It describes the events that pointed to the method as engaged and not apart from politics, organized as: the law of silence; the progress; the forgotten and hidden parts of their history; the dynamics of the group. Final considerations suggested explanations for its death as a quilombo and to the researchs action as a political action.
