This article discusses the roles of State and the feminist movement in the control of violence against women. It stresses the definition of violence and presents the national, international and personal political struggle, as it is illustrated in the case of Maria da Penha. The political contextualization of the personal drama of women victims of violence is considered in order to value women’s autonomy and their participation along the helping process offered by the State. Argues about the importance of converging actions of prosecutors, judges, multidisciplinary teams and women victims in the process of interpreting violence in order to pursue the best way to guarantee women’s safety and their physical integrity. At the end, brief comments are made about the challenges of psychology in this context.
