Abstract

SCHUCMAN, Lia Vainer. Racism and anti-racism: the category “race” in question. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2010, vol.10, n.19, pp. 41-55. ISSN 2175-1390.

This work aims to make a theoretical discussion about the use of the category race in the production of racism also in the struggle against racism. For this I do a theoretical review of how the concept of race was produced from the European academic thought of the nineteenth century, and reproduced in the Brazilian social thought. We notice that the category race is articulated with the phenomenon of Brazilian racism, since race is articulated both with the idea of colour in the Brazilian imaginary, as with the stereotypes and negative representations of the black population. Thus, we conclude, through the study of racial relations and the phenomenon of racism in Brazil, that besides the existence of racism in everyday life of the Brazilian population, it is updated, perpetuated and legitimized by the idea of race and, therefore, is through this political category that anti-racism is articulated.

Keywords : Race; Racism; Blackness; Anti-racism; Affirmative action; Racismo.
