Abstract

CORTEZ, Mirian Béccheri; SOUZA, Lídio  and  QUEIROZ, Sávio Silveira de. Intimate partner violence: a relational analysis. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2010, vol.10, n.20, pp. 227-243. ISSN 2175-1390.

It was investigated, based on a relational approach, how couples on a violent relationship describe their relationship and how their practice and conceptions of gender are connected on the configuration of violence episodes. We examined eight interviews of four couples whose relationships were characterized by violence episodes. The analysis resulted in the identification of three categories: 1) “Conceptions of gender”, which brings together the descriptions of practices and conceptions of gender, 2) “Conflict - disagreements between partners” and 3) “Description and evaluation of fights with physical aggression”. We identified that some traditional gender patterns were broken by wives while husbands reaffirm traditional patterns. It was evaluated that relational approach is a way to identify shared points of agreement and contradictions and disagreement present in the discourse of couples, allowing the comprehension of a complex dynamic that remains inaccessible by a unilateral focus of the relationship.

Keywords : Marital violence; Intimate partner violence; Relational approach; Gender; Gender relations.
