This article has the historical-cultural perspective as theoretical referential to the formation of teachers and explain the limitations of the concept of competence in the orientation of formation proposals constitutive of the human being in the singular man. For this, explain the origins of the concept and its historical, ideological bindings associated with the liberal individualism. To surpass the concept are proposed the concepts of work and activity. This concepts are taken as a theoretical reference of researches about formation of teachers presented to the end of the text.
