Abstract

CRUZ, Elizabete Franco. Bathrooms, travestites, gender relations and differences in school’s daily life. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2011, vol.11, n.21, pp. 73-90. ISSN 2175-1390.

Which bathroom should a transvestite “pee” at school? In the boys’ bathroom? In the girls’ bathroom? This issue, present in everyday life of schools and class rooms, was raised in a specialization course in educational administration for principals of São Paulo’s state schools and the bases of this study. Using the stories of school principals, elements taken from the film Transamerica, texts about gender relations and Foucault's ideas, a mosaic of reflections that led to the deconstruction of a binary perspective that dominates the knowledge about gender identities. The article likewise is an invitation to (re) invention of new ways to weave individuals and gender relations within the school.

Keywords : Transvestites; Gender relations; School routine; Trans-identities; Power.
