Abstract

MARTINS, Lígia Márcia  and  RABATINI, Vanessa Gertrudes. The concept of culture in Vigotski: contributions for school education. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2011, vol.11, n.22, pp.345-358. ISSN 2175-1390.

This work analyzes the concept of culture in Vigotski, trying to present what is the idea of culture in the work of this author to, from it, point out the importance of school education in the individuals' development. The cultural influence on the psychological development was studied by this author from the analysis of the process of the uses of signs as auxiliary means of psychical functions, converting them from spontaneous functions to volunteer ones. The psychical functions mediated by the use of signs that there are in the culture were considered as superior functions by Vigotski, so indispensable for man development. The culture for this author is product of historical laws determined by concrete conditions of human existence and, thus, the man in this perspective produces culture, but he is also result of the social connections, which are internalized by him and express themselves in the form of psychological functions.

Keywords : Vigotski; Culture; Sign; Social nature of psyche; Superior psychic function.
