The exercise of democracy requires modalities of political participation, not always confined to conventional forms. The paper provides a historical overview of the study of political participation, its definitions and classifications as well as the changes undergone by the concept. Then, cultural elements evolved in participation are treated with the aim of analyzing some South American social movements. From these is rescued their ability to become resistance movements, analyzing the characteristics of the identities they forge. Finally, it summarizes the most important Latin American social movements and their impact on historical and current political and democratic life of the region.
